Internet access in Japan with Rental 3G WIFI

Thu 15 Aug 2013

Its hard to get a pre paid SIM card in Japan, and wifi is common in hotels, trains and airports, but it can be a bit painful to get connected.

For this reason, I was very happy to rent a wifi internet connection from Global Advanced Communications.

As I was in Japan for 18 days, traveling and working remotely, their Rental Pocket WIFI was invaluable to stay connected for

Email
Facebook
Couchsurfing.org (Staying in people's homes as I traveled)
Google maps on my iPhone for locations, bus and train solutions to destinations
Work
Video Uploads
Blogging and Photo uploads
Skype

Performance of the rental WIFI was very good on mainland Japan, ok on Okinawa and not available in just a few rainforest situations.

18 days is 9000 Yen (about 90 USD), transacted by credit card and can be delivered to an address or collected at airport post offices.

It worked perfectly with Andriod phones, two notebooks, iPhone and iPod touch.

From what I understood, there are no download limits.

Its battery is only good for about 3 to 4 hours, so
- Charge it every night
- Turn it off when you are not using it
- Be wary of friends doing big downloads (as this drains the battery)

The company was very efficient and friendly in their communications (by email).
